Secondary Schools Learning Civil Defence
Hutt Valley Schools have leapt at the opportunity of working with Hutt Valley Emergency Management Team and Devereux-Blum Training & Development Ltd to ensure their schools have trained teams on the ground in a Civil Defence Emergency.
Over 100 students from 11 colleges in the Hutt Valley attended day 1 of a 3 day training programme running between March and May this year. With Devereux-Blum Training being a leading supplier of NZQA courses, the students were offered the chance to complete Unit Standard 20473: Rescue Casualties at Ground Level using Civil Defence General Rescue Techniques. By the end of the three training days students will have worked through sessions focusing on general rescue techniques. Students and teachers alike were keen on day 1 with students dressed in their Protective Personal Equipment (PPE), overalls, helmets and gloves. They tied knots, loaded conscious and unconscious casualties on stretchers, completed reconnaissance and victim marking exercises and rescued casualties.
This is a great initiative set up by the Hutt Valley Emergency Management Office and Devereux-Blum Training and Development Ltd were proud to be able to be a part of developing our young talent and developing a more resilient community.
